Coffee is a brewed drink prepared from roasted coffee beans, which are the seeds of berries from the Coffea plant. The genus Coffea is native to tropical Africa (specifically having its origin in Ethiopia and Sudan) and Madagascar, the Comoros, Mauritius, and Réunion in the Indian Ocean. The plant was exported from Africa to countries around the world and coffee plants are now cultivated in over 70 countries, primarily in the equatorial regions of South America, Central America, Mexico, Hawaii, and Africa. Today, coffee is one of the most popular drinks worldwide.
Coffee grows best between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn, within 30 degrees latitude of the equator. There are many different types of coffee trees that can be found all around the world including Arabia Coffee (Coffea arabica), Robusta Coffee (Coffea canephora), Liberica Coffee (Coffea liberica), Excelsa Coffee (Coffea excelsa), as well as various hybrids. In general, coffee trees prefer humid conditions with lots of rainfall and rich soil; however they can also grow in drier climates.
The first recorded mention of coffee growing anywhere outside Arabia appears to have been in 1570 by Francisco de Melo Palheta while he was trying to obtain Arabian Mocha beans for planting in Brazil. However it wasn't until 1727 when Brazilian Lt Gabriel de Paiva got hold of some fertile beans that were successfully planted on his farm Fazenda doengas at Porto Seguro near Bahia that commercial plantations began appearing throughout northeastern Brazil By 1800 there were more than 90 plantations producing 18000 bags each year Some varieties such as Bourbon point to an African origin while others like Mundo Novo have their origins elsewhere In 2004 coffees from Guadeloupe were given protected status under EU law
Guadeloupe Island is the oldest region in the Western Hemisphere growing coffee today and this 100% Arabica Typica coffee is a direct descendant of the strain of coffee introduced by Mr. de Clieu to Guadeloupe in 1726.
