Coffee is a brewed drink prepared from roasted coffee beans, which are the seeds of berries from the Coffea plant. The genus Coffea is native to tropical Africa, and Madagascar, Comoros, Mauritius, and Réunion in the Indian Ocean. The plant was exported from Africa to countries around the world and coffee plants are now cultivated in over 70 countries, primarily in the equatorial regions of the Americas, Southeast Asia, India, and Africa. Once ripe, coffee berries are picked by hand or by machine.
The two most common types of coffee beans are Arabica and Robusta. Arabica coffee beans are grown in Central and South America as well as parts of Southeast Asia while Robusta coffee beans come from West Africa and parts of Southeast Asia including Indonesia. Coffee plants usually grow to about 10 meters (33 ft) tall but can reach heights of up to 20 meters (66 ft).
Believed to have originated in Ethiopia, coffee was used in the Middle East in the 16th century to aid concentration.
